View Full Version : People Look Down On Students. Such A disgrace

I am a 16 year old student. Right after school, my friend and I went down to Sim Lim Square to Buy for A PSP. After an hour of shopping, I arrived at second floor shop next to the lift, it had red sign board, and I went in with my friend to enquire the price of a PSP.

One of a sales assistant on the left said to us in a very sarcastic tone" For u special, 199," I even enquired whether if it was a 1.5version. He replied and said “yes, it’s a value pack not a gigapack”, laughing away with the rest of his friends at the store. he even shouted over to his friend beside him " I want to prove to u" Just before I left the store, I asked him again and he said "sure 199" but as I left the store, he mumbled "too many window shoppers"

For all u people out there, a version 1.5 psp is worth 399sin. My friend quickly arranged to get the money, around half an hour later; we went back to the store and ask for the PSP. He purposely put on an act with his friends to say that he had just sold out the PSP (he was even laughing when he scolded his friend, he was acting), and asked me to come back tomorrow. It was around 5.30, and the chances of selling out all the PSP in the store was very slim.

As a result I asked him if he could confirm that there would be stock tomorrow, he replied sarcastically" tomorrow thing tomorrow talk, what if I get hit by a car, what if my shop tomorrow get burn down, how u tell me" I was very insulted by this incident, all round Singapore, the government has been promoting the GEMS, but if u have such people who discriminate others, why bother. Does it mean that if we are student we cannot afford products? I mean when u open a store to sell stuff, u would encounter some window shopper, but what if u mistaken someone who is interested and insulted him.

which one? i know there're many unfriendly peeps in sls. just get over it. you have to know their status and learn to speak their lingo. probably you gave a snobbish or unfriendly look to the sales man. thats why. i don't seemed to have a problem approaching anyone should i need to get anything. lols

You're a nice guy aren't you? If it had been me, I would have lost my temper with him, and well, say some unpleasant stuff.

And I think that $199 is too good to be true. You should enquire the price of the PSP from other shops before making the decision. That's what I did when I was scouting for my Xbox. I was really tempted to get one set at $650, but I happened to pass by this shop who sold it at only $630. The shop also offered 10% discount on all Xbox accessories and games too.

i guess.. beside not offending students.. they also can't offend stompers..

anyway, it is the usual case.. they do not believe that students have the money to pay.. when I am a student..

I went to Sakae Sushi at Simei.. they kept walking around us.. like want to make sure that we do not steal any plate so we can eat at a cheaper rate.. when me and my friend is discussing something important.. it really pisses us off..

My sympathies. I too have been so mistreated before.

Why don't you name the shop? Tell us the name, exact location and in fact the address. That way, others will be wary of its bad service and keep away from it. And serves them right.

The poor service culture will never be replaced with better service if consumers like us do not band together and advise each other of shops with poor service.

I think many shops in SL have accreditation with Spore Tourism Board. Google that to find out what that is and read STB website on feedback on customer service if it's sought.

Now that you've started a thread on such poor service in fact it's bad behaviour and bullying, just continue and I hope others continue with such feedback on other shops, so that we all will not be so badly treated.

But do mind one thing, I do not think they do that only to Students. They are mean to people young and old whom they size up as soon as you walk into their shop, on whether you can pay their prices or not. My adult relatives also kenna embarrassed in this way by other shops mostly i n SL and LP.

its not just isolated to students, SLS first floor salesmen treat everyone asking for a price this way too.
unless you're white of course, then you pay a $20 premium

Not afraid no business, they always say. I always hear this in Hokkien.

They obviously have more customers than they can handle and do not wish to have those who do not pay their prices. This particular shop is another of those who in fact do not bother with customers, only victims. They do not care whether you return ie that's real customers. A sensible businessman want return customers. Here this shop traps a victim; and begone with you! We dont care if you come back or not, or if you die or not. Got your money, now get lost! That's their attitude.

What's the name and address of the shop again?

Just like nowadays a bowl of noodles taste like shit; or rather no tasted like many years ago. Why? The stall holders says " go elsewhere if you don't like my nndles, I have more customers than I can manage, there are 4 million people in Spore, what you think I will lose money? dont be stupid!

So you're not a customer. So we must shout out bad shops.

it takes days to get a customer but minutes to lose them...sometimes we have to think how these customers feel too...cause after all if u were to be in their shoes,u will not like this kind of service that is given to u....

Best is to keep a cool head. Btw stores at 1st and 2nd floor not a good place to buy your stuffs...except there is a food store which sells cheap and yummy breakfast. If you want to buy psp you can go to the game shop on level three! A shop on the left of OTO, facing a big computer accessories shop call KAO YAP A1. Or for computer games on the fifth level there is one nearest the the mirror pillar.

I am a 16 year old student. right after school, my friend and i recently went down to the Sim Lim Square to Look for A PSP, after an hour of shopping, i arrive at at second floor shop next to the lift, it had red sign board, i went in with my friend to enquire the price of a PSP.

One of a sales assitaint on the left said to us in a very sarcarstic tone" For u special, 199," i even enquire whether if it was a 1.5version. he replied and said yes, its a value pack not a gigapack, laughing away with the rest of his friends at the store. he even shouted over to his friend beside his " i want to prove to u" Just before i left the store, i asked him again and he said "sure 199" btw as i left the store, he mumbled "too many window shoppers"

For all u people out there, a version 1.5 psp is worth 399sin. my friend quicky arrage to get the money, around half an hour later, we went back to the store and ask for the PSP. he purposly put on an act with his friends to say that he had just sold out the PSP( he was even laughing when he scolded his friend, he was acting), and ask me to come back tommrrow. it was around 5.30, and the changes of selling out all the PSP in the store was very slim.

as a result i ask him if he could comfirm that there would be stock tommrrow, he replied sacarticly" tommrrow thing tomrrow talk, what if i get hit by a car, wat if my shop tommrrow get burn down, how u tell me" i was very insulted by this incident, every where has been promoting the GEMS, but if u have such people who disciminate others, why bother.Does it mean that if we are student we cannot afford products? i mean when u open a store to sell stuff, u would encounter some window shopper, but wat if u mistaken someone who is interested and insulted him.

Also if Sim Lim Square is tourist destinaiton, if this was overheard by a tourist what impression would he have of singapore,Inconsiderate and rude people???
Y MUST PEOPLE LOOK DOWN ON STUDENTS???

Young man... How do you expect others not to look down on you when your posting is full of spelling errors and grave grammar mistakes? Maybe you and your friend should spend a little more time brushing up your English rather than playing PSP.

Besides, the title of your post is a sweeping statement. People? Who? Everyone who is working in Sim Lim? or anyone who is older and regarded as an adult? or salesmen in general? or everyone else except you and your friend?

If it is just a single particular encounter (even if a few), give your posting an appropriate title. Eg. An unpleasant shopping experience at Sim Lim.

Fortunately, most forumers in Stomp are like yourself. Youthful and lack of insight, so they probably would not notice the irony in your post. I can clearly see that from the many responses.

By the way, it is SARCASTIC. Try to get it right. :)

Yes I understand.. some people find it hard to stand corrected. I come here to read and be amused by the stuff that young Singaporeans like yourself post. Once in a while when I am bored, I will lift my finger and click on the login button to correct the distorted views of some people or give them some of my old fart advices.

I can see that you are pretty agitated when I corrected your distorting title. It doesn't matter if my suggestion came straight out of a composition book, it is still more accurate than yours. I also appreciate the use of acronyms. They are good for SMS (see?) because of the limited character length, but using acronym all the time may affect a person's ability to spell (which is obvious in your case haha)

And no thanks for calling me names. It just shows your lack of ability to control your anger, proving me right about you. :D However, I will consider your advice of being a teacher, it will sure be a tough job with a whole class of teens like you. ;)

jNomiswol: i agree i am hot headed, but the tiger won eat you if u don step on its tail. AGREED?? just to please u, i took sometime off and edited the post heres the new review, but i would still like you to do the corrections of what u think thats is right in the first post.

Here it is<({[I am a 16 year old student.

Also Sim Lim Square is tourist destination; if this was overheard by a tourist what impression be left of Singapore, Inconsiderate and rude people???
Y MUST PEOPLE LOOK DOWN ON STUDENTS???

Dear teen,

Your response made me wonder. How do you quantify the amount of attraction that your title has over mine when both were not tested against one another? You are right about capturing my attention but I wasn't really interested in your plight. As I mentioned earlier, out of boredom I just wanted to correct your misleading, distorting and biased title (remember the word - people?) Perhaps you can take some time to ponder about why did you chose to use the word 'people' when you actually meant only a particular salesperson whom you came into contact with?

I am also quite confuse about your reluctance to use proper English (grammar and words, if you like) just because "it" is extremely difficult to find in forums. What on earth does that have to do with one's decision to use proper English a not? Do you think that fellow forumers will not understand you if you do so? Therefore follow the norm? go with the flow?

As for correcting your first post, I rather you bring it to your teacher. It is too much trouble for me to highlight, underline and add texts.

Dear "Adult" (if you are even adult that is)

In reply to your "correct your misleading, distorting and biased title", I suggest that you wear casual clothings and go to some very exquisite and expensive place in Singapore and see if someone there bothers about your existance. I do agree with him that people really look down on students because a majority of us can't afford expensive things as our only income comes from our parents. However, we are their customers and they should serve us, knowing fully that we do have a choice of not purchasing their goods. It's our right.

For the second paragraph, I would like to oppose and hope that you would see it from my point of view.

Yes, I am reluctant to use proper English. This is because this is a Singapore-lang forum. I have been to certain US or UK forums and actually got warned because I have been using abbreviation too frequently. I came here because I want to be myself, be understood, and not to be judge like it's some major exams by those caucasians. I believe they are here for the same reason. It's not following the norm or some trendy wave. It's just being ourselves. Singaporeans.

Well, for the 'just because "it" is extremely difficult to find in forums', I would have to ask you to venture in various UK and US forums. They are a real pain in the a*s.

Oh yah, one last thing before I end this..

And why would I need that many people to agree with me when my comments were meant for you only?
If your English is that strong, please correct it. It's "were only meant for you". Please go back to primary school, my student can do better than you. :)

And I'm sorry but I want you to eat back your words about other's English. You have no right to put him/her down like that.

Thank You for taking your time to read this.

Dear "neither teen or adult",

I am a little confused about your identity. Are you a student? an adult? You associate yourself with the teen with "we" then you go on to say that your "student" can do better than me.

If you are indeed a teacher, I am losing my faith in MOE. Just because you got critised in some foreign forums for your frequent use of abbreviations, you decided to come home and seek comfort (to be yourself). I don't quite understand the rationale. Forum is a place where people exchange opinions and ideas. You gave up on the opportunity to learn something just because you cant be bothered to express yourself without using abbreviation? Were you in such a hurry that typing a word in full is simply too time consuming for you?

Anyway, to cut the long story short, the word 'people' as used in the title is a sweeping statement. For every single incident that you may cite to quantify your claim, there's always two others that show otherwise. There will always be black sheeps in the service line whether towards students or anyone else. But it is inaccurate to generalise the attitude of the service line because of a small percentile (unless you can prove statistically) This is not a matter of using proper English (as my intention has been distorted by some unhappy politically incorrect teens), it is a sign that shows a lack of insight. Everyday, we have forumers shooting off their opinions, taking cheap shots at MOE (in particular), ranting about the government etc without giving the matter more thoughts. Even when it is clear that the incident was not verifiable, they continue mindlessly to criticise simply because they "sympathise" with it. This is really sad.

If you have been following the thread, you will know that I have not claim to be the almighty in the use of English. I do try my best to use proper English and make no excuse for not doing it. So there's no need attacking me from that angle. To err is human, but in the case of the thread starter, making excuse for using imporper English is lame.

By the way, I have called British Council to check. It is perfectly fine to say "..meant for you only" just like "For your eyes only" documents. You can verify by calling 6473 1111 and have them direct you to somebody. Again, I must stressed that the issue on using proper English is a digression from my original intention.

I am not eating my words for sure. I sympathise with his unfortunate shopping experience, but claiming that everyone else (people) looks down on students? That's a far fetch. Worse yet, he did it in bad English.

..BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH.. (too long to quote)
Who I am working for is none of your concern. But it's not the MOE and please try not pull in such a big organisation to scare me.

This is beyond the whole "shopping" experience. It is utterly rude for you to say that someone has bad English and you are not one who judge this. I want to be comfortable with who I am by writing abbreviations. If I find uncomfortable, I'll just leave. That is for my leisure and you have no right to poke ur nose into it.

Thanks

my mom and i tend to wear sloppy clothes. most of the time we r not entertained by the sales assistant just because of our poor image.
its quite humilliating tho..
i believe whether we r in sch uniforms or not, it doesnt really matter as long as we can afford to buy their products.
yeah ....im also like that ..but wait when u see ang moh come to shop

Why look down on us, students? Although we may be in school uniform, doesn't mean we don't have money in our pockets. This kind of people... are just too much. How can they treat us like dirt?? sigh..

that shop the threadstarter originally talked about, i had the exact similar experience, only thing is i was an NS personnel back then. They apparently look down on young locals and try to rip off angmohs, i remember seeing this old fat ang moh guy scolding the store assistant for charging so much for something, he kept bargaining until the store assistant relented. I can totally emphatise with you about this incident and yes i agree, service standards in Singapore are dropping because of these black sheep.

Another example of service pests, go to tanah merah MRT station on a day a US warship arrives in Singapore, you will see the entire road packed with mercedes taxis with drivers approaching the clueless american navy guys, offering them a ride to town, $10 per head, bloody ridiculous.

PS to Nomiswol: I want to end this fight btw us 2. It's coz it's so freaking childish. But I would forgive you for your insentivity and rudeness to fellow stompers. I WILL ignore you from now on to prevent me from wasting energy on you than reading a book which is much more fulfilling. Thanks.
