I know this comes a bit late, but the Guard of Honour (GOH) for this year's NDP will be carrying the SAR21 for the first time. Question: How do you tulong senjata with such a short rifle?

Correction. its TURUN SENJATA = DOWN WEAPON
your pronounciation can be mistaken as Tolong = Help or Tulang = bone

TURUN SENJATA = DOWN WEAPON doesn't mean its necessary that the rifle needs to touch the ground like what we did with M16.
The British L85 or SA80 is a bull pup rifle like our SAR21

and see how all the rifles are at TURUN SENJATA position when the guards are standing at SEDIA. (did I spelled correctly?) :D

First of all, apologies for the misspelling. I definitely need to brush up on my Malayu. But the British soldiers in their very nice fur hats above are actually doing LUSOK (spelling again?) SENJATA. I sort of payed more attention to the NDP clips Mediacorp is showing and it appears that there may not be a down arms command for the SAR21. Instead, they hug the rifle with both arms. Interesting.

Imagine `tolong senjata' and the soldiers go down on their knees asking for help. `Tulang senjata' will mean the soldiers take out a piece of bone and down it into thei pockets. Ha ha ha..... Just kidding

Rusuk senjata is the correct term for it. Rusuk = ribs. Probably the term is used considering that this position requires you to hug the weapon close to your ribs. I could be wrong though.

The thing is that, the entire procedure is cut short and simplified, even for 'Homad senjata'. Then when 'Serangtiri', the soldiers will simply cross hand and hold the butt of the SAR21, there is no more 'Tulung Senjata'.
The new procedures started in this year SAF Parade, but it will be more clearer when you guys watch the NDP.
Please pardon me should the spelling of the Malay words are wrong.

Ok, I have a final question, and this goes out to existing military personnel like Bored_Dad:
Why did they decide to switch to the SAR21 for this year's GOH? I mean, why must a ceremonial rifle necessarily be the standard issue combat rifle? For example, the US uses the M1 for ceremonies (which I think dates back to at least WWII) instead of the M16 or M4.

Haha... This question, I have to admit that you got me there, cause I don't involved in the NDPEXCO committee, thus, I really have no idea why they decided to switch to SAR21 this year for the GOH, while the rest have being using SAR21 for few years already.
My only guess and pure speculation will be probably that only recently they finaly able to come to agreement how best the drill proceeding should be for the GOH. Plus the fact that SAR21 is a product of our national pride which was recognised around the world, as such, it's good to use SAR21 for the NDP.
Anyway, I stand to be corrected, like I said, I really don't know and the above was purely my own speculation and thinking.

Added trivia :
The Police do not have the SAR 21 in their ****nal/stock of weapons.
However the Police G.O.H is bearing them...
Ok ... tried to say arssenal but the filter came on.
To AceTan, well I've been to all the NEs, Previews & Actual NDPs since 2002...
So yeah, I'm really lucky.
But it comes with a price - All the burned weekdays/ends.
I celebrated two birthdays at Stadium during NE 03 & 04.
All of the waiting, preparing & running around...

I think the correct Malay commands are :-
Turun Senjata (down arms) - arms refer to the rifle
Rusuk Senjata (shoulder arms)
Hormat Senjata (salute with arms)
Cepata Jalan (march)
Senang Diri (stand at ease)
Sedia (stand at attention)
:)

fyi, the sar 21 drills looks simple, but doin the drill require more effort den m16 rifles. when in senang diri, we "hug" the rifle infront, compared to down arms in m16 drills. fingers will numb when doin the sar21 drill.. :(

Our home-spun SAR 21 is definitely superior to the SA80, which jams very often. Have you seen the drop test for the SAR 21 that our boys like to demonstrate to VIPs? They woudl drop the rifle on to the hard concrete floor. Not a scratch. Nothing damaged. The VIPs woudl go ""Ahhhh'' and be suitably impressed.

the Turun Senjata u see in the pic's actually only used by istana guardsmen. as their tour of duty on guard is 2 hours. during parades there'll be no Turun Senjata. instead after Hormat and Rusok the command Senang Diri will be given, and the GoH will bring the SAR21 across their body and left hand help to support the weapon.
i was a ceremonial guardsman in the provost during ns, and before i ord i was one of the pioneers who helped to develop the new SAR21 drills.

haha the development process was shit la. 2 platoons of men brainstorming with a SAR21 on how to do drill with the bloody short rifle, after that have to demonstrate to 1 whole bunch of warrants who came to our camp to view the drills. nerve-wracking.

But it turned out fine although I must admit that picture you posted was the first time I heard of the SAR can do that lol, I always thought it to be too short.
