It's no secret that the life of NSmen are getting much much better as compared to the olden days. Any NSmen who are currently serving NS, could you share on how's the men are being treated, when mistakes are committed?

Haha I'm not to think highly about the army, but I agree that punishments are much, much lighter nowadays. Gone are the days whereby your superiors walk up to you, spit in your face and walk away laughing while you cry yourself to sleep. Changing parades are also a thing of the past.
Still, "tekan-ning" has to be done at a reasonable level. Every soldier in every country goes through a fair deal of "tekan", but then again, my belief is that:-
-The purpose of an army is to prepare a group of fine men to defend a nation when the need arises.
-OBVIOUSLY, when you fight a battle/war, the purpose is to win.
-And to win, you'd rather have a group of highly, motivated soldiers than a group of demoralised men.
As I said, punishments are best not over-done. At the rate some of our superiors are going, we're going to have a group of demoralised men who'd gladly throw in the white flag.

During my time, change parade is still around, doing endless amount of pushups, situps, jumping jacks is common... , I did hear stories from those lau peng that they kena before things like Stand by bed in parade square and other crazy stuff like carry log and chiong up hills, etc.
Nowadays, I heard from recruits that 20 pushup is max allowed for punishment. Not sure if really got such a rule.

have to be the change parade.. my platoon stayed on the 4th floor.. we started out in PT attire... then vest and slack... then no. 4 .. then no.4 with SBO... then no.4 with FBO.... given only 5mins.. so thats why we had to keep changing.... definitely memorable...
The PT sessions during BMT were full of tekans too... really train us up physically and mentally...

simi tekan..??? dun have la...
but punishments is meted out when things are not done on time and not properly done so... and one thing i know is the guys hated chao geng people.
other words, just obey and do it...
When the instruction/order is reasonable, and you cannot fulfill it, it is called punishment. For example, you are asked to clean the bunk, but when the instructor come in to check and found a lot of dirt and dust on the floor, punishment is deserved. Typical punishment is 20 push-up and clean the bunk again.
When the instruction is unreasonable, and there is no way you can fulfill it, it is called Tekan. classic example is change parade. PS office is at 2nd floor, bunk is at 5th floor. soldier is originally in PT kit, PS ask him to change to FBO and come back to office in 2mins. Obviously he couldn't make it, next PS will ask him to change to Poncho underwear then Smart 4 and so on.

Last time, the emphasis of training was to break down the civilian personality in you totally and rebuild you as a soldier, trained only to follow instructions. But now the doctrine changed. They now want to build on each individual's existing strength and train him to be a thinking soldier. But then I think the phrase thinking soldier is a little oxymoronic hehe. Imagine if all the soldiers think and have their own opinions. Then who is going to follow instructions? It'll be like, eh no sir i think it should be done like this. No sir! Like this better leh. Aiya you stupid or what... Like this lah... ^^i think we as men should just follow instructions haha.

I think what you have said is true but is it desired? People from the top would of course love it to be that way, it is like having a slave.
I have friends from uniform groups (NPCC/NCC/RED CROSS/...) and i tell them you must be mad to join such a uniform group. the last thing i would do is have a person command me around. their reply, yar it sucks being commanded around but after 2-3 years, you get to do the same to your juniors! it is like 'sweet revenge' for them. and the cycle continues. i guess it is the same in the army, hahaz your reward from being higher up is not only do you get a bigger paycheck, you also get more slaves. Killing two birds with one stone.
But of course, this system has a flaw, can you imagine if you have an idiot leading? someone who thinks his better then the rest just because his rank is higher, but in actual fact, is retarded. These people should continue their army life, for it does not exist in the real world :D

its not always your commander follows you around...you have to think and make decision when your leader is not around...its better than sitting there waiting for orders before you act...talking about quick response
and we are trained to think as in be our own leader in certian kind of situations. being highly unpredictable is one thing that will cast a fog among the enemies vision of our battle plans...
