View Full Version : Should NSFs be paid more and get CPF?

When I was enlisted (about 10yrs ago), the monthly allowance for NSF range from $200 (for recruits) to about $500 (Officers). There was an increment a few years ago of about 50%. Which means NSFs allowance should now be around $300 to $800. Average is probably around $400-500.
I personally find that the allowance given is very little and there is no CPF contribution.
Singapore spend a lot of $$ on defence every year. Millions are spent on military hardware that expires after a few years.
Can't the NSFs be paid a more respectable allowance? I am not suggesting same pay as regulars who sign on, but at least around half of that. A range of $600 to about $1000 should be reasonable for the sacrifices made by all these men. Remember that NSFs are doing a real "FULL-TIME" job, they are on 24hrs standby.

Frankly speaking, regulars are not getting a lot for what they do.

i fully agree with that! i've known a few regulars who just sit on their *** all day long
Which is precisely why they won't get so much :)
On a more serious note though, I want to bring up an important issue I stumbled upon while browsing thru this forum. For some of the guys, they may come from low-income families and some of these young men might even be the sole breadwinners for their respective families. Can a meagre private-corporal pay help make ends meet in their families? Even if they rise to 3SGs or even 2LTs, the money may not last long, especially since they will only draw that allowance for a limited period of time. Certainly, if they had gone out to work for that 2 years, they will be able to earn more than what the army can provide.

2 of my friends had to signed on after completing their Diploma because they needed to support their family. Which is why I hope that Mindef can address the issue.

If each NSF is paid around half of what regulars are getting and multiply that several times ('cos not only a single guy is enlisted per year), how much does MINDEF have to fork out?
Ok, then how much tax will you be forking out if MINDEF has to fork out more?

I don't have the figures of how many NSFs in service at any one time, but I do know that SAF is spending quite a bit on Military hardware. My suggestion is not to increase defence budget, but to balance it out so that servicemen are reasonably compensated for their contribution and sacrifice.
