Thumbs up Nomination for Mr Lim Kok Meng

- This is the nerdy version of him. He looks much more like a penguin now.
Mr Lim Kok Meng
Level Head/Science
Anglo-Chinese School (Primary)
(Teaches Science and PE in Class 6H & 6I)

Mr Lim Kok Meng, or k0kmeng, or "The Evil One", jokes about in class, and can interact and relate with us students very well. He likes penguins and his worksheets are decorated with unique penguin designs. He also has a rating system for worksheets, namely "No Sweat!", "Challenging", "What!?", "Can cry!" and "Foaming!". He would give us penguin stickers if we get a certain amount of stars for that worksheet. He changes his wallpaper everyday (and his pictures are constantly amusing) and plays games with us on Facebook!

He can engage us in his lessons by using our names to illustrate examples. He makes sure we understand the lessons by explaining topics we do not understand. He would encourage us with Mythbusters videos, Time Warp shows and March of the Penguins.

While he can joke, he can scold. There is always a time to be serious, and a time to joke. But, he usually amuses us with his "magic tricks" and antics, especially during PE, where he would advise us not to bend down too low while doing sit-ups and in turn, smell your groin (I imagine its unpleasant! )

The effort he puts into his revision booklets (which comes with Sherman Lagoon comics) and his worksheets shows his dedication to teaching and his drive to ensure he imparts us with the knowledge in life.

He is a great friend as well, able to give friendly and sincere advice when you ask him nicely on facebook! He would take it as part of his job scope, and it's such a rare find -- teachers who can joke and be serious and friendly at the same time.

I'm sure you have never seen a teacher like this in your school days, right?

Especially if he is a penguin...

Thumbs up Mr Eric Koh - Our Discipline Master

Mr Eric Koh
Head of Department
Non-IP Consortium
Punggol Secondary School

He had been a great teacher and discipline master from the very first day he stepped into Hillgrove Secondary. Although he loved telling us his different kinds of stories during our lessons, yet he never neglected our English lessons and his smile always made 3A2's (2007) day! Thanks for teaching us and being a really very good teacher to us.

Before he stepped into the school, some of my friends were just normal students and we only knew how to study and make fun of each other. But when he came into our lives, everything in school started to change. For myself, I became a more confident leader. All that could not have been possible without his constant care and guidance, correcting our every mistakes to make us excellent student leaders. He formed up the student leadership team in the school and turned the discipoline of the school around within the short time he was with us. He is one of the greatest DM I've ever seen in my life. Simply the best! Student Leadership at Hillgrove would not have come this far without him.

Thank you so much for all the fun and your sacrifices and we really appreciate that. We will always remember a very good teacher like you. We hope to see you again, Mr Koh!

Thumbs up Miss Tham Yuen Peng of Bukit View Secondary School.

Miss Tham Yuen Peng
(Senior Teacher)
Humanities Department
Bukit View Secondary School

Miss Tham Yuen Peng was a very jovial person, she would always greet her colleagues and students with her heartwarming smiles and cheerful voice. She was not only my teacher, she was my ' best friend ' in school.

I was a rebellious student back then, and refused to attend classes. Coupled with my depression, i was suicidal and i 'locks' myself up.
She had been patient with me while i was dwelling on my own problems and sadness. With her sincere and caring attitude, along with her patient and jovial characteristic, it didn't took long for me to open up to her.

She encouraged me to focus on my studies and gave advices to my problems.
Not only had she taught me to cherish my life, she had also hammered good morals in me, which made me a better student and a better person.
She was a thoughtful teacher who always made sure that her students have the required notes to study for their exams. When i lost my textbook, she had been generous and lent me her own copy of textbook.

Miss Tham Yuen Peng was not only responsible, she was punctual and hardworking. She waste no time in teaching us and would conduct extra lessons after school and during our holidays. Her method of teaching was unique and efficient, not only would she relate her own experiences with the topics, she would show us photos so that we can absorb the lesson content easily. As a result, my class always did well for Humanities.

She might be petite in size, but she have a strong spirit. We were getting near the exam period when a family issue strucked her. Students get stressed during exam periods? Imagine the pressure and stress that teachers have to deal with!
However, Miss Tham Yuen Peng did not falter with the burdens placed upon her. Instead, she kept up a positive attitude and imparted her knowledge to us.

6 points for N level is impossible without your guidance.
Thanks for being such a good role model and teacher, Miss Tham.

Talking Nominate a teacher!

(See her pwetty face? She has a delightful smile )

Name : Mdm Loh Ming Woon
Age : 39 years old
Subject : A and E Maths
School : Tampines Secondary School

Mdm Loh is a very dedicated Mathematics Teacher. She always encourages the class to persevere no matter what set-backs we have. She is able to teach us Mathematics to the extent that it is understandable and easy for us to grasp the subject. Mdm Loh loves to teach the class and is really very hardworking. She would give us worksheets to do everyday so that we can get enough practice and score well in the future.

Mdm Loh is zealous. Before our Mid Year Examinations, she single-handedly wrote out all the A Maths formulas onto a piece of paper and photocopied them and gave them to the class. She is also very kind and caring. When many of us failed a test, she would give us extra lessons after school during her free time and give us even more worksheets to practice. After that, she even gave all of us a retest and if we are able to score well for it, she will give us a passing grade for the test we failed.

Mdm Loh also encourages us to have resilience and never give up. Every lesson, she walks in the class confidently and is well prepared to start the class educating us.

Mdm Loh is not just your typical nerdy or boring teacher. Usually when she steps into the class, she never did put on a smile and the class would joke that when she smiles, it is super rare to see it! When she is impatient, she would rat the table with her fingers. Haha! This is a bad habit...

We all love Mdm Loh as we can really see that she cares for us. Even if she is angry, it is for our own good. Her lessons are also very fun. She would teach us all the concepts and make us answer the questions in the process.
Her unique way of picking the students to answer the questions is for example, the first person to answer is the register number of the date on that day. To choose the next person to answer, she would ask for the previous student's birthday and apply math into it to choose the next register number. This is really interesting way!
E.g. First she calls register 23 because the date is 23. Next the person with register number 23's birthday is on 3/11/94, she would decide the next person to be register 23-3+11. There are many other methods she would use.
This keeps entertained in class!

Mdm Loh would also encourage us to visit the Mathematics learning website called "Heymath.com" and that website teaches maths quite clearly.

You can never find such a teacher with true passion for educating students and dedicated!

*Note : Of course she does smile a lot! She is a very cheerful teacher too!

Thumbs up A Tribute to Ms Edna Tay :)

http://navalbasesec.swiiit.com/wbn/s...a%20Tay%20.jpg

Name: Ms Edna Tay Chee Joo
Age: 43
Subject: English and PE
School: Naval Base Secondary School

This won't be a short paragraph, because there are simply too many things to describe about the versatile and talented Ms Edna Tay. She may just be a normal teacher teaching English and PE but what she teach us is something we could not find in the textbook.

She have been the form-teacher of me for 2 years and some of my classmate for 4 years. She may look fierce and strict on the surface but she is someone who is caring, sweet and friendly.

As a form teacher, she have lots of things to handle, she treat everybody in the class equally well. During examination period, she also provide breakfast for everybody in the class. All she do is hoping for us to pass and excel in our studies. But many time, we do disappoint her and she also have to face remarks from others teacher about our class.

However, she still did not give up on us and willing to spend extra time on us. Her english lesson was always the interesting part of the day in school. She would always source for something interesting. As long as it could help us in anyway.

As a teacher, she also care about everyone in the class and talk to us like a friend. She also gain respect from every single student, as she was always greeted by them in every morning/afternoon.

She also inspire us to do better by organising more events and also helping us to get informative leaflet & brochures.

She can just be a normal teacher who just teach what is in the textbook but that isn't her spirit and attitude. As a teacher, she also spend alot of money on us by organising buffet and celebration.

Default Eliza's favourite Teacher: Teacher Dino

Name: Koh Wen Zhu Dino
Age: 24
Occupation: Early Childhood Educator
School: (Should be) YWCA

My first contact with Teacher Dino was when my daughter, Eliza, was in her kindergarten. Back then, Eliza was in her Kindergarten 2 and the form teacher in that class was teacher Dino.

It was the first time for me to see a male teacher working in the preschool line. I was no doubt doubtful about his ability to educate my child.

However, soon my perspective towards him changed. He was very professional compared to the other teachers who were working in the same school. He was delicate to his job, informing parents about the lessons going on in his class and paste pictures of the on-going activities in his lessons.

Instead of coming back with complains which my daughter used to do, Eliza came back almost everyday telling me what she has done in school. She would explained to me what teacher Dino has taught and how much she loved her lesson. Till now, Teacher Dino is still someone she would occasionally talked about and she remembers the good old days they had together.

My daughter missed the projects that he used to conduct. There was once that He told the children to bring along a soiled T-shirt, which i was perplexed on what he was going to do. And what happened was he taught the children how to was their own clothes with soap! This was a very interested lesson and what preschool should be teaching. In a fun, creative and meaningful way. My daughter used to hate going to school as the lessons she had was boring, boring and boring. But when He took over the class, i could see the change in her attitude towards school and that helped in her attitude towards school. She started loving school and she would even be early so as to be the first to see him. During school holidays, my daughter would even passed by to see if he was in the classroom.

Another 'interesting' lessons given by him was his moral stories. He liked to use animals as examples and give moral story. One that i could remember the most was," Once, a cat beat his friend and his friend was sad. The cat said sorry to his friend and his friend forgave him. The cat was cunning and did this again. The friend still forgave him. The cat did it for the third time, and his friend said, 'i will forgive you, but i will leave you from now on." He went on telling the children that they must be nice to their friends, or the friends might leave them one day.

The miles he walked during my daughter's education always exceeded what he was supposed to. Once when i was sharing with another parents about my child's progess in school, i was amazed to find out that the parent contacted teacher Dino at night to shared about his son problems at home. They discussed for several nights and Teacher Dino came out with several advices. It was good that in the end, his son's behavioral problem stopped.

My daughter cried when it was time for him to depart from the school. I felt sad too and it recently that i found out he has won an award as a lifelong learner. I was glad that he has made so much progress and i will want to thank him for his passion in teaching my daughter.

If without him, my daughter may not be as good as she is now.

P.S. Elyza misses your song and gym class.

Thank you.

Mrs Ng

Exclamation Mr Ong Kai Wei!!!!!

Mr Ong Kai Wei
Maths Teacher
Punggol Secondary School

Mr Ong was my teacher for both Add. Maths and E. Maths since secondary 3, year 2005 - year 2007, in punggol secondary. I remember deeply of what happened on my first lesson with him. Probably he would have remember what happened too. At that time I thought my Add. Maths and E. Maths were gone for sure. Why? Simply because Mr Ong went against me on the first lesson. At that time he asked the whole class to sit in groups of 3 but i did not. He, of course, did not continue the lesson. He said "ask you all to sit in groups not alone?" and staring at the ceiling. He was indirectly talking about me. So my classmates asked me to sit with them and i moved over. After class, i told all my classmates that i regretted taking up Add. Maths and not principles of account [POA].

I guess everyone will understand how i feel at that point of time. However, it is not the beginning that i want to share with you all about this teacher of mine. It is the process, the years with him, that I'm going to tell you all.

He simply changed me. I used to hate his lessons, sleep during his class, not doing his homework and even get a single digit result for Add.maths. He did not try to councel me or talk to me. He just simply injected something called "Goals Of Life" into me. He kept stressing the importance of maths and how the results affect our future.

He may sound unfriendly at times, but i swear, i do not remember him scolding me at all. I do not know the reasons why too.

I started loving maths, doing maths question everyday just because of him. I started to listen and joke around with him during class. I gave it all out during my Secondary 4 mid year exam. I scored quite well for both Add.maths and E.maths. I was really happy. I had never imagine me scoring "A"s in maths. Indeed not only maths, i started doing well for other subjects too. He never fail to come in to Add.maths class with a smile.

After which he asked me to help my classmate whom did not do so well for maths and he nominated me as the best peer tutor of the school. I started working very closely with him on maths, asking ton of questions and doing homeworks that he gave. In fact, i did more than what he gave.

My three years with him was not very long but it was my best days in Punggol Secondary School. I got back my O level results. Sadly, I disappoint him when I did not managed to get A1 for Add.maths. I felt sad and all, but all he said was "it's ok, i know you did your best."

He is a crucial character in my life. Without him, probably I would have ended up in some courses that I do have interest with. With my maths results, I got into the best Aerospace course in SP. I wanted him to be proud for having a student like me as always. Even till now, he is still sharing my class story to his students. Being his first batch of student was not as bad as i thought.

He is simply the best teacher.
